Liebherr Wine Refrigeration F1 Error: Wine Zone Temperature Sensor Fault
What Does Liebherr SBS / Vinidor Wine Refrigeration F1 Mean? The F1 fault code on a Liebherr Side-by-Side combination unit (SBSes series) or Vinidor multi-zone wine cabinet indicates a fault in the wine zone temperature sensor. SBS and Vinidor units share a control board across multiple cooling zones — typically a refrigerator zone, a freezer […]
Quick Assessment
Answer to continue safely
Is it safe to keep using?
No. The wine zone is no longer reliably regulated. The refrigerator zone continues to operate normally, but bottles in the wine zone are at risk. Move sensitive bottles to the refrigerator zone or backup storage.
Can I reset the code?
Yes. A power cycle clears transient connector faults. Hardware-level F1 returns and needs sensor or harness replacement.
When to stop immediately?
Stop if you notice: F1 returns immediately on every breaker reset, Wine zone temperature drifts more than 5°F from the set point.
Symptoms You May Notice
Wine zone display flashes F1 while other zones show normal temperatures
On an SBS or Vinidor unit, the InfoLight display shows multiple zones at once. F1 typically appears in the wine zone field while the refrigerator/freezer/other zones continue to show valid readings — a clear indicator that the fault is wine-zone-isolated.
Wine zone cabinet feels noticeably warm or cold compared to other zones
Reach into the wine zone — bottles are at a different temperature than the InfoLight target. Compare with the refrigerator zone, which continues to operate normally; the temperature discrepancy is the practical evidence that the wine sensor has failed.
BluPerformance compressor cycles do not match wine zone demand
On SBS units the same compressor handles cooling for the refrigerator side and the wine side, with electronic dampers managing the airflow split. Without a valid wine sensor, the firmware cannot allocate cooling to the wine zone correctly.
Visible condensation on bottles even though refrigerator zone humidity is normal
Wine zone humidity changes when the temperature drifts, and bottles begin to bead with moisture — while shelves in the refrigerator side remain dry. This zone-isolated condensation pattern is diagnostic.
Possible Causes
Wine zone NTC sensor element open or short circuit
The thermistor inside the wine zone sensor probe has failed after long-term operation in the wine cabinet climate.
Requires ProfessionalWine zone sensor harness disconnected at the inter-zone connector
On SBS units the wine zone sensor harness routes through a connector at the zone divider; vibration from compressor cycling or a recent service visit can work it loose.
Requires ProfessionalDamaged sensor harness in the shared electronics bay
A wire in the wine zone sensor harness has chafed against sheet metal in the shared electronics compartment, which is more crowded on SBS units than on standalone wine appliances.
Requires ProfessionalSafe Checks You Can Do
-
1
Move sensitive bottles to the refrigerator zone or backup storage
On an SBS unit, the refrigerator side continues to operate normally and can absorb wine bottles temporarily — they will not be at ideal serving temperature, but the refrigerator zone is more stable than a failed wine zone. For collectible bottles, transfer to a basement or external wine storage.
A 38°F refrigerator zone is too cold for long-term wine storage but fine for short-term protection while service is scheduled. Wine survives a few days at 38°F much better than continued temperature instability.
-
2
Power-cycle the entire appliance at the breaker
Switch off the appliance breaker for 60 seconds, then restore power. Note that this affects the entire SBS unit — both the refrigerator and the wine sides will restart together. Wait the BluPerformance restart delay (about 4 minutes) before judging the result.
On a multi-zone unit, the food in the refrigerator side is not at risk during the brief power cycle as long as you do not open the door.
When to Call a Professional
Contact a qualified technician if:
- F1 paired with E2 (secondary zone air sensor) — multi-zone wine sensor cluster failing together
- Cabinet stores aged or investment wines
- SBS unit is more than 8 years old
