Liebherr Power Surge and Thunderstorm Protection Advisory

Liebherr appliances use precision electronic control boards and BluPerformance inverters that are vulnerable to power surge damage. Lightning strikes, brownouts, and switching surges from other equipment on the same circuit are the leading cause of F5 control board failures and F6 BluPerformance inverter faults on Liebherr units. This advisory exists to inform owners of the risk and the protection options.

The Vulnerability

BluPerformance inverter boards convert incoming AC power to a variable-frequency DC drive for the compressor motor. The conversion electronics are designed for stable line voltage and can be damaged by voltage spikes, brownouts that drop below the inverter’s minimum operating range, or switching surges from other inductive loads on the same circuit. Once damaged, the inverter typically requires replacement starting from $475.

The Lightning Risk

A lightning strike on or near a power line can produce voltage spikes far exceeding the rating of any household appliance. Liebherr units are no more vulnerable than other modern refrigerators with electronic controls, but the cost of replacing a BluPerformance inverter is high enough that the risk is worth managing.

Protection Options

  • Whole-house surge protector installed at the main electrical panel — the most effective protection. Typical cost: from $300 installed.
  • Point-of-use surge protector with adequate joule rating (at least 2000 joules) plugged between the wall outlet and the appliance. A backup option for renters or apartments where panel work is not allowed.
  • UPS (uninterruptible power supply) for SGN biomedical-grade freezers — provides clean power and short outage protection critical for cold-chain integrity.
  • Dedicated circuit for the Liebherr appliance — eliminates switching surges from other equipment sharing the same circuit (especially important for garage installations).

What to Do During a Thunderstorm

  • If the storm is severe and surge protection is not installed, unplug the appliance — Liebherr units hold safe temperatures for hours unopened during a brief power-off
  • If the appliance must stay running, ensure the SmartDeviceBox app has temperature alerts enabled to catch any post-storm issues
  • After any nearby lightning strike, check the InfoLight display for fault codes the next time the appliance is opened
  • If F5, F6, or F8 appears within hours of a storm, document the storm event for the service visit — surge damage is sometimes covered by homeowner insurance

Urgency level

Informational — important for households in lightning-prone regions. Whole-house surge protection costs less than a single BluPerformance inverter replacement and protects every appliance in the home.
